Skype Launches v4.0 for Android – Brings the Metro UI to Android

unnamed (9)

On Monday, Skype began rolling out a huge update to their Android app. This is all in celebration of them having over 100 million Android installs. The new version has a huge redesign. Skype says that the redesign took place to make it more consistent with other platforms’ versions. Basically it’s in line with the Windows-8 version, as it is using Microsoft’s Metro UI. I actually like the Metro UI, but I don’t know how I feel about it on my Android devices.

This new version of Skype features a cleaner “conversation-first” interface, which puts greater emphasis on instant messaging. You can also tab through different areas of the app, and change tabs using swipe gestures. The changes appear to be pretty deep as well. Skype says they’ve been “rebuilt from the ground up” to be more reliable and faster. Which we’d all love to see change with every app, right?

Skype is now owned by Microsoft and said to be bundled in Windows 8.1 which is due to be released this fall. The Android team for Skype has said that they are bringing more further improvements. So we’ll be looking forward to the many more updates coming to the Skype app.

Here’s the full changelog from Google Play:

What’s in this version:

– Everything.
No, seriously. Quite literally everything. We took a closer look at all the ways people use Skype, and used that insight to lovingly redesign and rebuild a shiny new Skype for Android.
Got an Android tablet? Don’t worry if you don’t see any changes, yours are just around the corner…
– Free and unlimited video messaging
Record life’s everyday moments and share them with the people who matter most, with free and unlimited video messaging over Skype.

The size of the new app is about 14MB, at least on the Nexus 4. The Google Play listing states that the size varies per device. It is version 4.0 with loads of changes. How many of you still use Skype? If you don’t use Skype, what do you use instead? Maybe Google Hangouts, Oovoo, or something else? Let us know in the comments down below.
